McLaren boss: Alonso about to renew contract
McLaren boss Zak Brown is confident that the Spaniard will extend his contract. With the separation from Honda, the team has created the conditions.
McLaren’s traditional racing stable is on the verge of renewing its contract with Fernando Alonso after the completion of its engine deal.
“We are very close to an agreement. We had a dinner with him yesterday, he is very happy with the team,”said McLaren boss Zak Brown on Saturday during the Singapore Grand Prix (Sun.from 14 o’ clock in the LIVETICKER).
Brown also revealed the difficulties associated with Alonso’s continued commitment,”He is one of the highest paid drivers in the sport. If he stays with us, of course, he wants to stay with us,”said the 45-year-old, but also emphasized:”Big boys cost a lot of money,” Alonso’s salary is estimated at over 30 million euros per year.
After three disappointing years with its engine partner Honda, McLaren announced on Friday that she had quit with the Japanese and will be driving with Renault-Power at the rear for the first time in 2018.
Alonso, 2005 and 2006 world champion with the Renault factory team, had always linked his stay with McLaren to a decision of the team, but also emphasized his loyalty to McLaren.
However, the team loses a lot of money due to the separation from Honda. The Japanese were not only the main sponsor, they also supplied the engines free of charge and took over part of the driver’s salaries. However, McLaren will have to pay for the new Renault power units himself.
