Berger: Performance weights do not belong in professional sport
DTM boss Gerhard Berger is happy that the performance weights in the DTM have finally been abolished – weights have a “taste”.
The eternal discussions about performance weights are over.Audi, Mercedes and BMW will compete at the last two DTM weekends in Spielberg and Hockenheim with the same weight. After a perpetual hack, the three manufacturers also put no more stones in the way of abolishing the additional weights. The tenor was that it was a “strong signal” for the DTM.
Gerhard Berger is also pleased that this decision has finally been made:”My basic attitude is that such weights are not part of professional racing”, says the chairman of the DTM umbrella organisation ITR in’ ORF’.Berger says:”The DTM is professional racing. It is not possible that someone who does a good job gets a performance weight. So I’m glad we took this step.”
On the other hand, the performance weights ensured an extremely balanced season. On the first seven race weekends there were ten different winners. With Mattias Ekström (Audi), however, a driver who is still waiting for his first win of the season is leading the championship:”It may well be that the races here or there aren’t that thrilling, but they are fair and sporting in the right way,”Berger points out.In the end, the best man should win.
It remains to be seen what effect the elimination of the performance weights will have “We have an extremely balanced season. At the next race, six or seven drivers can take the lead in the championship.Theoretically there are still ten candidates for the title,”says Berger enthusiastically, but he says:”This is motorsport at its best, but performance weight always has such a flavor. In the professional world and in the eyes of the spectators, this is not accepted.”
Berger said in advance of the abolition that the discussions about the performance weight were detrimental to DTM,”I am therefore pleased that all three manufacturers have now said that we are taking this step. It’s going to be super exciting, of course.Everyone weighs the same at the Red Bull Ring. The DMSB had signalled that they were supporting a proposal to abolish the performance weights, which was unanimously put forward by ITR and manufacturers.
