Driver about From the weight rule:”Thought it’s a joke!”
What the DTM drivers say about the abolition of the performance weights:”Don’t know anyone who hasn’t been happy” and “Right Decision”.
The weights are history: the news last week about the planned abolition of the controversial and much-discussed performance weights in the DTM was both a delight and a surprise for drivers and experts alike. After the long hiccup over the abolition of the successful ballast and the lack of agreement between the three manufacturers, hardly anyone believed that there would still be changes to the annoying weight rule in the current 2017 season.
“When I got the message, I wasn’t sure if anyone would take a joke, because I didn’t think that you would be able to solve it,” says Audi driver Mattias Ekström, who was an opponent of the performance weights from the very beginning,”I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been happy with the message,” says Ekis “Team mate Nico Müller on demand from’ Motorsport-Total.
“For me, this was the biggest and most positive surprise of the season,”adds the leader of the standings. The innovations in the DTM have provided a good basis for this and “they should not have a bad taste of bad news,” like the discussions about the ballast.
Hockenheim I: Three manufacturers on podium with equal weight
The fight for the championship is more open and exciting than ever before: ten drivers still have a chance of winning the title. With new points ahead of Lucas Auer, Ekström is at the top of the drivers’ standings and is looking forward to a tough but fair fight until the end “I am looking forward to two weekends as we imagine the DTM”, said the Swede.
“The start of the season at Hockenheim, when all cars with the same weight were on the road, has already shown how close the field is to each other.I expect things to be similar in Spielberg and at the final at Hockenheim,”Müller reminds us that all three manufacturers were on the podium at the opening weekend in the Baden Motodrome.
Timo Glock is also relieved that the three manufacturers were able to agree on the abolition of the weights “For the sport it is the absolutely correct decision. We drivers have joined forces to argue that the weights should be abolished and that we should not have anything to do with them,”explains the BMW driver, who is somewhat mourning his weight advantage at the Red Bull Ring this coming weekend.
Would like to be 20 kilos lighter in Spielberg, but…
“Of course, I would have been happy if I had been able to drive up and down the mountain in Spielberg with 20 kilos less than the competition,”he laughs.According to the old regulations, BMW would have traveled to Spielberg with 20 kilos less weight than Audi and Mercedes. On the Berg-und-Talbahn in Styria, this would have given the Munich team a time advantage of around four tenth of a second per lap.
However, the 35-year-old knows that the decision was the right one for the sport and the fans:”We have to think as a whole and it’s the absolutely right decision,”he adds. For many fans, the weight rule was incomprehensible, so it is better to keep the rules as simple as possible.
Mercedes man Maro Engel is also relieved in the truest sense of the word:”It is a fantastic message for the DTM, drivers, fans, teams and manufacturers. It’s all about the competition now and you have to say that the changes since the beginning of the season have been top without exception,”he sums up.
The last stone has fallen
Every driver in the field had the chance to win a DTM race,”says the winner of the Moscow race,” and the last stone that had to be knocked down was the subject of weights. We have now achieved this.Congratulations to all those involved, that was the right decision,”says Engel.
The DTM Commission, which includes representatives of the German Motor Sport Association (DMSB), still has to approve the final abolition of the performance weights. However, DMSB President Hans-Joachim Stuck is confident that this formalities will be completed before the DTM weekend at the Red Bull Ring and that the 18 DTM cars in Spielberg will have equal weight.
