Williams’ Formula 1 racing team will probably decide against Robert Kubica. Instead, a Russian has a good chance. Ex-world champion Jacques Villeneuve is outraged by this.
The decision on the last cockpit for the 2018 Formula 1 season has probably been made. The British team Williams is said to have opted for Sergei Sirotkin and thus against Robert Kubica.
According to information from Motorsport Total, Williams chose the Russian after the tests in Abu Dhabi. Both drivers have completed tests there, but according to the team’s analyses, Sirotkin is said to have shown better performance. Kubica would be a third choice.
While the old master may at least hope for a contract as a test driver, the present Formula 2 driver Sirotkin’s current commitment remains a bland taste. The Russian is considered to be a so-called paydriver, so he would bring some sponsorship money to the team.
Kubica would certainly also bring in financially strong sponsors, but Kubica would not be able to match the money that Williams would receive from the Sirotkin commitment. The Russian racing team SMP Racing from SMP Bank boss Boris Rotenberg is to pay 17 million euros for Sorotkin.
Kubica was a Formula 1 driver from 2006 to 2010. In 2011, he sustained a severe hand injury as well as numerous arm and leg fractures in a rally accident.
Former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve is not surprised by the development at Williams.
“They’ve already sold their souls for the billions of Lawrence Stroll. Even Massa was faster. The podium position in Baku doesn’t convince me, it was pure luck,”said the Canadian at Inside Racing about last year’s driver duo from his former racing team.
Villeneuve had no good news to say about the former Williams rider Valtteri Bottas either,”Bottas’ performance was almost embarrassing. He’s a solid number two, but not any more. I would have chosen Pascal Wehrlein.”
The Finn will also be driving for the Mercedes team in 2018. Wehrlein is currently without cockpit for the coming season.
