Bernd Stange becomes the new Syrian national coach. The former GDR selection trainer has been active in several countries in the past.
Former GDR coach Bernd Stange will be the new coach of the Syrian national soccer team. This was confirmed by the President of the Syrian Federation, Salah Ramadan, on Wednesday. Stange is expected in Damascus in mid-February.
The 69-year-old has worked in the past as national coach of Iraq, Oman, Singapore and Belarus as well as for the national league clubs Hertha BSC and VfB Leipzig. The globetrotter has also had numerous club stations in other countries, including Australia (2001) and Cyprus (2006), where he was named “Coach of the Year”. In 2003, he received the FIFA Presidential Award.
Syria’s dream of participating for the first time in a football World Cup was only broken in the playoffs against Australia. Syria forced the Socceroos into extra time in the second leg, but lost after a 2-1 defeat.
