WEC: Fisichella returns again
Giancarlo Fisichella returns to the long-distance World Championship after two years and competes in the GTE Am class for the Ferrari Spirit of Race team.
The teams and drivers for the super season 2018/19 of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2018 will be presented on Friday. However, the first driver announcements are already available in advance. The Spirit of Race team registered in the GTE Am class has a prominent newcomer to report: Giancarlo Fisichella will drive the Ferrari 488 GTE supported by AF Corse together with Thomas Flohr and Francesco Castellacci.
For Fisichella, after a detour with Risi Competizione to the IMSA, it is now his return to the WEC, where he was one of the champions in 2012 with AF Corse in the GTE Pro class. The 45-year-old Italian is now in the GTE Am class. In April,”Fisico” made its first official commitment to the Spirit of Race at the WEC Prologue in Le Castellet.
“I am very pleased to join Thomas, Francesco and the entire Spirit of Race team. The WEC is one of the most thrilling and highly competitive racing series in the world. I am looking forward to a successful season in this strong team. The new Ferrari 488 GTE made an excellent first test drive. I look forward with great anticipation to the race track”, says Fisichella.
Before moving to endurance racing, Fisichella has competed in 229 Formula 1 races, three of which he won. In the WEC 2018/19 he will meet his former Formula 1 team mate Fernando Alonso, among others.
