Schäfer-Klub intervenes at FIFA
The hostility between Saudi Arabia and Iran is also causing trouble in football. Iran’s football association president Mehdi Taj flies to FIFA to solve the problem.
The hostility between Saudi Arabia and Iran has also led to a political issue at Esteghlal club from Tehran, the club of German coach Winfried Schäfer.
Iranian association president Mehdi Taj flew to the FIFA World Association in Zurich to intervene personally with FIFA boss Gianni Infantino. Schäfer has been working for Esteghlal since the beginning of October 2017.
Iran’s protest is based on the Asian Champions League match between Esteghlal and Saudi Arabia’s top club Al-Hilal.
Due to the tense political situation, the Games cannot be played in both countries. Esteghlal voted for his home game on 20. February Qatar, Al-Hilal for the duel on 16. April Kuwait.
The Asian Confederation AFC, however, rejected Esteghlal’s election and insisted on holding the event in Oman. Here too, the political situation between the host country and Iran is strained. The Schäfer-Klub was not given the opportunity to offer alternative suggestions.
That is why the Iranian association is trying to intervene at the top of FIFA’s agenda. However, the Asian Champions League is hosted by the AFC Confederation.
It remains to be seen whether FIFA will actually intervene in this case.
