Fed Cup: Maria loses – Germany in the back
Tatjana Maria loses the opening singles in the Fed Cup against Belarus in the absence of Kerber and Görges. In the second singles, a debutante is allowed to play.
Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) was defeated in the first singles of the Fed Cup duel in Belarus. The 30-year-old, in the absence of Angelique Kerber (Kiel) and Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) in Minsk, Germany’s number one, lost 6:4,1:6,2:6 despite a decent performance against Arina Sabalenka.
The German team is thus trailing 0:1 and is already under pressure before the second singles match of the day. Debutante Antonia Lottner (Düsseldorf) will meet Alexandra Sasnowitsch on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday (from 11:00 a. m.) Maria and Saznovich are facing each other, after which Lottner will play against Sabalenka. The new team boss Jens Gerlach nominated the experienced Anna-Lena Grönefeld (Nordhorn) and the young Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied) in her first match for Germany for the potentially decisive doubles. The duo meets Wera Lapko and Lidija Marozawa.
Belarus, which had lost last year’s final against the USA in the final, will also not be on top form in the duel with Germany. The two-time Australian Open winner and former world number one Viktoria Asarenka will not be in Minsk this weekend.
