Bobby Rahal warns competition:”This was just the beginning.
The strong performance of the Rahal bolides was the theme of the IndyCar paddock par excellence – how RLL compensated for the experience gap.
Graham Rahal and Takuma Sato amazed the entire IndyCar scene by producing top times on the assembly line during the test drives at the ISM Speedway in Phoenix. For the RLL team it was the first test drives of the season in contrast to some big competitors. But there was nothing to be seen of the lack of experience – on the contrary.
“Now it has become clear how much work we have invested in competitiveness over the winter,”says team boss Bobby Rahal to’ Motorsport-Total. com’,”To be honest, I was a little disappointed not to have been among the teams that were allowed to test in advance. But it allowed us to concentrate even more on what we could do at home. That’s why we got to the track in top condition. Our performance has shown that.”
Rahal-Letterman-Lanigan was not involved in the manufacturer’s winter test drives. This work was done by Penske and Ed Carpenter Racing for Chevrolet and Ganassi and Schmidt/Peterson for Honda. However, the data from the test drives had to be shared with all teams. The question of whether this was a disadvantage or an advantage for the four teams is a matter of disagreement.
Bobby Rahal is sure that his team can take the Phoenix strength with them into the season:”We have learned a lot again. Some things worked, others didn’t. That’s what test drives are for. We have not only been quick, we have also collected a lot of information and data. We should become even stronger now that we know much more.”
“It’s not easy to stand out in such fierce competition, but I have full confidence in our engineers and drivers. If we keep working hard, it can be a really good year for us.”
In the past years, RLL has only competed as a one-man team with Graham Rahal in the IndyCar series. The racing driver’s son complained again and again about the missing data input of a team colleague on the race weekends. For this reason, he always lacked the necessary consistency to win the championship. Too often victories alternated at the age of 20. In 2018, RLL will compete in all races with at least two cars for the first time since 2013.
