Losing on purpose?
Mark Cuban has to pay over half a million dollars to the NBA. The owner of the Dallas Mavericks makes a very unfortunate remark in a podcast.
The North American professional basketball league NBA has fined Mark Cuban, club owner of the Dallas Mavericks, 600,000 dollars (approx. 488,000 euros). This was confirmed by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. The league reacted to Cuban’s statement that it was the smartest thing for his team to lose as many of the other season’s matches as possible in view of the draft next summer.
“I shouldn’t say that, but when I went to dinner with some of our boys last night, I meant: Losing is our best option,”said Cuban in the Dr. J podcast of NBA legend Julius Irving said.
Dallas is the penultimate in the west with 18 victories and 40 defeats, the team around superstar Dirk Nowitzki (39) will not reach the championship round. The worse the record at the end of the main round, the sooner the 2011 champions will be caught in the coming draft and will be able to secure a better talent on paper. That’s why Cuban Losing is the best way to lose, in US sports it’s called “Tanking”.
“Adam (Silver, NBA boss, Red.) would hate to hear that,”Cuban said, but he shared his thoughts with the players,”I introduced our plans for the summer and made it clear that the tanking will stop. We’ve been doing this for a year and a half, and it’s been brutal for me.”
Whether Nowitzki will enter his 21st century in 2018/19. NBA season is still open. Most recently, the man from Würzburg had confirmed his intention to continue.
