Kerber fights his way through – Zverev fails
Angelique Kerber moves into the next round after a hard-fought match in Indian Wells. For the Zverev brothers, however, things were not going as well.
Germany’s top tennis player Alexander Zverev unexpectedly dropped out of the ATP tournament in Indian Wells/California in the second round. The 20-year-old lost 5:7,7:5,4:6 to the Portuguese Joao Sousa after a walk-through in the first round.
For his older brother Mischa Zverev, the 30-year-old lost to 18th seed Sam Querrey from the USA 4-6,5-7. Philipp Kohlschreiber is thus the only remaining German in the men’s competition.
Former world number one Angelique Kerber fought her way into the third round in the Californian desert. Kerber defeated the Russian Ekaterina Makarova after initial difficulties 3:6,6:4,6:2.
The match had been cancelled on Saturday shortly after the start of the second set due to rain. In the third round, the two-time Grand Slam winner will face Russian Jelena Wesnina.
The world number one Roger Federer was also slowed down by the rain this weekend. On Sunday, the Swiss tennis idol won against Argentinean Federico Delbonis 6-3,7-6 (8-6) and will now meet Serbian player Filip Krajinovic.
Former world number one Novak Djokovic lost to the Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel 6:7 (3:7), 6:4,1:6 when returning from elbow surgery,”It felt like my very first match. Really weird. I lost the rhythm completely,”said Djokovic after the match.
