Saints and Pelicans owners deceased
Tom Benson is dead. The owner of two teams from New Orleans is 90 years old. He can no longer recover from influenza.
Tom Benson, owner of the NFL Club New Orleans Saints and the NBA Club New Orleans Pelicans, died on Thursday at the age of 90.
The billion-dollar US businessman succumbed to the consequences of a flu illness with which Benson was already suffering on 21 January. On February 2, he was hospitalized in New Orleans, Louisiana. According to his family, Benson fell asleep peacefully.
Benson bought the New Orleans Saints in 1985 to prevent an impending move to Jacksonville/Florida. In 2009 the team under Benson’s direction won the Super Bowl. The Pelicans, then known as New Orleans Hornets, acquired Benson from the NBA for $338 million in 2012.
“Tom Benson’s commitment to New Orleans and the NFL was legendary,” condoned NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
