Rally Finland cancels famous Ouninpohja jump
The so-called “Yellow House Jump” of the Ouninpohja special stage will no longer be part of the Finland Rally in 2018
The special stage Ouninpohja of the Rally Finland, one of the fastest and best-known stages of the entire World Rally Championship (WRC), loses one of its main attractions this year. The famous jumping hilltop at the “Yellow House” will no longer be part of the route of the Rally Finland in 2018.
It falls victim to the organisers’ efforts to keep the ever higher speeds on the gravel roads in the Finnish forests in check. For this purpose, around 60 percent of the route will be changed this season. By using narrower roads, the WRC cars are to be braked down.
This is an approach that local hero Jari-Matti Latvala fundamentally understands:”This is certainly due to the fact that average speeds were so high last year,” the Toyota driver told’Motorsport-Total.com’.
Last year’s winner Esapekka Lappi had driven an average speed of 126.1 km/h throughout the rally, making the 2017 Rally Finland the second fastest in the history of the World Rally Championship.
After people complained about it, the organisers were forced to do something like this,” says Latvala.
“We are now driving on narrower roads, which will reduce the average speed. But for me, they took out the best part of Ouninpohja. Without the wide street at the Yellow House it’s not the same anymore,” says the Finn.
