National player Bonga celebrates Lakers debut
German basketball top talent Isaac Bonga celebrated his debut at the Los Angeles Lakers just one day after signing his contract. The 18-year-old playmaker scored three points in Las Vegas on Saturday evening (local time) in the 96:79 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Summer League.
The change of the 2.03-metre-high national player, who was previously active for the Bundesliga team Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt, became official on Friday. No details regarding the term of the contract were provided. According to media reports, the Skyliners will receive training compensation of around 600,000 euros.
Bonga is already the second German in the new team of superstar LeBron James. Only a few days ago the Californians had engaged Moritz Wagner from Berlin. 21-year-old Wagner was the 25th player to be drawn by the Lakers at this year’s NBA draft. Against the 76ers he scored 16 points and eight rebounds, confirming his strong form.
Should Bonga and Wagner make it into the final Lakers squad, they would be the next German NBA pros. In addition to former champions Dirk Nowitzki and Maximilian Kleber at the Dallas Mavericks, Dennis Schröder at the Atlanta Hawks and Daniel Theis at the Boston Celtics, four German players are sure to be part of the new NBA season. At Paul Zipser, the Chicago Bulls have an option to extend the contract.
