Expensive sandwich: Keeper punished for feeding attack
Wayne Shaw now has to pay dearly for eating a sandwich during a FA Cup match against Arsenal. He will be punished for interfering with the betting market. Wayne Shaw caused a sensation in a last season’s FA Cup match against FC Arsenal, which saw the stout replacement goalkeeper of fifth league club Sutton United get a sandwich during the match, but was now suspended for two months by the English Football Association and fined 375 pounds (410 euros) for his unusual action. Because with a bookmaker you could bet that the 45-year-old eats a sandwich on the bench. The odds were 8-1, and he stressed that the betting offer was not the reason for his attack. The association’s independent rules commission, however, saw it differently – and punished him – but at least the ban should only be of peripheral interest to him. He had already announced his resignation after the accusations.
