Reform plan: Will Real and Barca soon be playing abroad?
The Spanish league wants to host league matches abroad in the near future. Two countries in particular are eligible for Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Spanish league’s president, Javier Tebas, said that league matches should take place abroad next season, and that”La Liga is global entertainment and we want to increase the international importance of the league,”said Tebas to the Financial Times.”As part of this effort, we are discussing the option of playing some league games outside Spain. The discussions are still at an early stage, but we support the idea:”It is planned that FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, among others, will soon be playing league matches in the USA and China, and a similar reform was planned for the English Premier League. However, when massive opposition from fans and politicians was felt, the bosses withdrew their plans in 2008, and some other sports have long since put the idea into practice. The NFL, for example, regularly stops in London.
