Simeone shortens contract – to extend now
Coach Diego Simeone will stay with Atletico Madrid. The Argentinean extends the contract with the Madrilenians until 2020 – after having had it shortened beforehand. The Spanish top club Atlético Madrid will continue to retain coach Diego Simeone. The Argentinean, who was particularly sought-after by Italian clubs, extended his contract with the ten-time Spanish champions, which expires this summer, by a further two years until 2020. Curiously enough, Simeone had shortened his contract less than a year ago. Simeone (47) took over the coaching office at Atlético in December 2011 and helped Real Madrid’s city rivals regain fame. Directed by the former professional, the club won the Europa League in 2012 and two years later the Spanish championship. He also led his team to the Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016, where Atlético lost to Real in the final.
