Despite victory: Mourinho challenges League Cup
The Manchester coach questions the multiple of the format.Nevertheless, he urges the teams and their players to respect the competition.
Jose Mourinho has questioned the added value of the competition after Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Burton Albion in the English League Cup.
“Would English football be better off without the tournament?Maybe.Maybe the teams would then be fitter for the European formats,”the 54-year-old told BBC Radio 5 live.
Nevertheless, the Manchester coach takes the league cup seriously:”There is this competition and then we have to respect it.We must respect the sponsors and the opponents. Many of us do our best.”
According to Mourinho, an official competition is always important for the “Red Devils”.
Danny Mills, who won the cup with Middlesbrough 2004, sees the system as an advantage:”It’s a chance for the youngsters and it’s very important. You can qualify for Europe and it’s a way to use all the players.”
According to the BBC expert, anyone who has a problem with the format should not buy tickets.
Manchester fans will probably have good memories of the competition. The club has already won the trophy five times, including last season.
The League Cup is the second cup competition on the island after the FA Cup and will be viewed critically because of the additional burden on the Premier League teams. There is also such a format in other European leagues like La Liga.
In Germany, on the other hand, only the DFB Cup is played.
