New contract for national coach Sturm
Marco Sturm remains loyal to the German national team and receives a long-term contract. Shortly before the Olympic Games, the DEB wanted to send a signal.
Shortly before the Olympic Games, national coach Marco Sturm extended his contract with the German Ice Hockey Association (DEB) until 2022.
The 39-year-old, who took over the job in summer 2015 and led the national team twice to the World Cup quarter-finals and the Olympics in Pyeongchang, is set to continue the success story.
“We wanted to send out a signal before the Olympics – both for the team and for the fans,”said DEB President Franz Reindl, who had already begun talks with the former NHL star last autumn. The original contract ran until after the World Cup in Denmark in May.
Sturm has been preparing the DEB team for the winter games in South Korea since Saturday in Füssen. After the dress rehearsal on Tuesday (18.30 hours LIVE on TV on SPORT1) in Kloten against Switzerland, the crew flies to Pyeongchang on Wednesday. She will play her first match against Finland in the preliminary round on 15. February. The other opponents are world champion Sweden and Norway.
