Officially: Pascal Wehrlein returns to the DTM!
The youngest DTM champion of all times returns: ex-Formula 1 driver Pascal Wehrlein returns to Mercedes for DTM comeback – five of six drivers confirmed
Comeback after two years in Formula 1: Pascal Wehrlein returns to the DTM in 2018 and competes for Mercedes. The 2015 DTM champion, along with his team mates Gary Paffett (2005) and Paul Di Resta (2010), is the third DTM champion to compete for the Stuttgart team this season.
“I associate the DTM with fantastic memories, not least of my title win in 2015, but of course also of the strong team spirit and the many wonderful experiences with the boys,” says Wehrlein,”I followed the DTM closely during my Formula 1 time and was also present at one or two races to visit and support the team.
“Since my last DTM race at the season finale in Hockenheim in 2015, a lot has changed in the DTM. But I like challenges and can’t wait to drive our new car on the track for the first time. The first tests can’t come soon enough for me.”
From Formula 1 back to the DTM
In the past two seasons, the 23-year-old for Manor and Sauber started in Formula 1. For both teams he achieved the only points positions of the season. His best result was an eighth place at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2017. At the same time, in recent years he has also completed test drives as an official test and replacement driver in the Mercedes world champion silver arrows.
Pascal established himself in the DTM at a fast pace and became the youngest champion in the history of the series in 2015,”says Mercedes DTM team boss Ulrich Fritz.” The team is delighted that Pascal will be returning to the DTM last year.
“In the time when he was with us, many friendships developed and even in the years when he was driving in Formula 1, the contact never broke off. In the meantime, a lot has happened in the DTM with the new cars, new tyres and new rules. But we are convinced that he will quickly find his way around with his experience and commitment.”
2018 is Mercedes’s last season in the DTM for the time being. On Wednesday morning, the Stuttgart team announced four of Wehrlein’s five team mates. Gary Paffett, Paul di Resta, Lucas Auer and Edoardo Mortara will attack for the brand with the star in the last DTM year:”Together we are pursuing only one goal: to conclude the last chapter of Mercedes’ 30-year history in a positive way,”says Operations Manager Ulrich.
Who will be the sixth man in the Mercedes squad in 2018 has not yet been officially confirmed. According to information from’ Motorsport-Total. com’ Daniel Juncadella will probably return to the DTM-Cockpit of Stuttgart. The Spaniard drove in the German touring car series from 2013 to 2016 and was most recently involved in the Mercedes GT program.
