ManCity despite embarrassing bankruptcy in the quarter-finals
Manchester – Manchester City suffered an embarrassing defeat in the second leg against FC Basel. The team around Gündogan and Sane are embarrassed after a clear victory in the first leg.
Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gündogan have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League with title contender Manchester City despite a disgraceful defeat.
The two German international players were unable to prevent the embarrassing 1:2 (1:1) in the second leg of the quarter-final against FC Basel, but three weeks earlier Manchester had practically already won their ticket to the final eight with a 4:0 at the Swiss championship (schedule and results).
In the eighth minute, Gabriel Jesus gave the Sky Blues a dream start. Mohamed Elyounoussi (17) and Michael Lang (71) turned the match around for the guests, who sold themselves as expensive as possible despite the hopeless situation (the game to read in the TICKER).
In front of 49,411 spectators in the Etihad Stadium, the team of former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola played mainly with the handbrake applied. The Spanish coach had given many regular players a breather. Among other things, the former Wolfsburg-based Kevin de Bruyne was sitting on a spare bench at the kick-off. Gündogan, who had scored twice in the first leg, and Sane were both part of the starting line-up for Premier League leaders.
Former Schalker Sane was the most conspicuous player in the early stages and also prepared the lead goal. The 22-year-old put Bernardo Silva in the limelight, who for his part played exemplary for the Brazilian goalscorer Gabriel Jesus.
In 16. In the second minute, Gündogan missed a great opportunity to go 2-0, but the ex-Dortmund failed from five meters but because of the strong FCB-Towart Tomas Vaclik. After the equaliser, Basel became stronger, but there were no longer any compelling goal-scoring opportunities before the break. Manchester did not do more than necessary.
Even after the break, the league cup winner continued to run long distances in a gentle gait. Basel pulled themselves out of the affair with the top favourite and bid farewell to the king’s class.
