“Sister Act” is waiting: Williams is in round three
After her baby break, Serena Williams has reached the third round of her comeback in Indian Wells. There now her sister Venus waits.
Former world number one Serena Williams has entered the third round of Indian Wells on her comeback after the baby break.
The American will now face her older sister Venus at the WTA tournament, against whom she has won 17 of 28 family duels so far.
The 23-times Grand Slam winner Serena Williams (36) won in the second round after 1:52 hours 7:6 (7:5), 7:5 against the Dutch Kiki Bertens, Venus (37) defeated Sorana Cirstea from Romania 6:3,6:4.
“One of us will be eliminated. I would have preferred to play against another, really against everyone else, but that’s the way things are now. It’s what it is,”said Serena Willams. She is the first woman to triumph in Indian Wells for the third time. For this, however, a victory in the “Sister Act” has to be achieved.
Serena Williams, her daughter Alexis Olympia on 1. After having been born on September 9th by Caesarean section, she played her last Australian Open triumph in January 2017 on the Tour before starting in Indian Wells. At that time she had won the final 6:4,6:4 against her sister.
On the other hand, Rain Angelique Kerber stopped for the time being. The second round duel between the two-time Grand Slam winner and Yekaterina Makarova from Russia was cancelled shortly after the start of the second set. Kerber had lost the first set 3:6.
For the tenth seeded Kerber, we continue on Sunday. Your match is the third on Court 2, starting at 8 p. m. CET on the tournament day. Kerber had a walk-through in the first round.
