Barca-Star:”Sometimes I don’t want to leave my house”
A star of FC Barcelona reveals his soul to a football magazine. There are some parallels to Per Mertesacker’s “Outing”.
With his courageous, open statements in a Spiegel interview, world champion Per Mertesacker has sparked a controversial debate in German football. The former international had admitted to having been under massive psychological pressure during his career in the DFB eleven, which had put a heavy burden on him in almost every game with the federal eagle in his jersey.
Record international player Lothar Matthäus and other greats of German football had reacted with irritation and criticism, while others like former team-mate Mike Hanke supported the former Bremen player.
Andre Gomes, Portugal’s national player and midfielder in the Spanish top club ranks, has told Panenka that he will have to face immense problems with Barca on and off the pitch that go beyond the purely sporting aspect.
The pressure to perform at FC Barcelona is known to be enormous. Often after the games he is still so impressed by the past match that a normal training is not possible for him, he thinks of the bad things that have gone wrong and what he has to do better.”Too much to think of hurts me,”says Gomes.
He would get a lot of support from his teammates, but that couldn’t dispel his discomfort in the field,”I don’t enjoy it on the field and feel anxious,”says the 24-year-old.
His negative world of feeling is rather embarrassing for the European champion.
“I’ll lock myself in. I do not allow myself to get rid of the frustration I have. I don’t talk to anyone, and I don’t want to bother anyone because I’m ashamed of myself.”
In everyday life, Gomes also struggles with the problems his profession causes him:”It has happened to me more than once that I didn’t want to leave the house. The possibility that people could stare at you when you go out on the street is something I’m ashamed of,”the Portuguese describes his feelings.
In the summer of 2016, Gomes had changed to FC Barcelona with great advance laurels. Barca paid 35 million euros to FC Valencia, where the top talent won in two seasons. In Barcelona, however, the highly invested Gomes has so far not been able to meet his expectations.
