Dzeko shoots Rome into the quarter-finals
Rome – AS Rome are on their way to the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite a first leg defeat. Edin Dzeko scores the decisive goal against Shaftyor Donetsk.
Former Bundesliga top scorer Edin Dzeko shot Italy’s top club AS Rome into the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in ten years. The 31-year-old Bosnian scored the goal of the day in a 1-0 (0-0) win over Chessjor Donetsk. The first leg in Ukraine lost the Roma 1-2 three weeks ago.
Dzeko rewarded the hosts for their patience at the start of the second half, which had been limited to lethargy before the break. In the first 45 minutes both teams were afraid of the risk and tried to avoid mistakes. The game lived from the suspense – until Dzeko tunneled after 52 minutes goalkeeper Andrij Pyatov (the game to read in the ticker)
The former Wolfsburg player also ensured that his team was able to secure a win outnumbered in the final phase. Ivan Ordets stopped his solo entry after 78 minutes with an emergency brake and saw the red card. In the hectic final phase, the gypsies were no longer in danger.
Their plan worked out well, after champions Juventus Turin a second Italian team will be drawn in the quarter-finals, which will be drawn on Friday at 12:00 p. m.”We learned from Juve”, defender Kostas Manolas had already said before the game:”We need calm, intelligence and balance in our game for progress” (schedule and results).
However, the Roma also needed a long run to prove their home strength in front of 47,693 spectators at the Olimpico Stadio. In the group stage, coach Eusebio di Francesco’s side had remained unbeaten in Rome, leaving Chelsea and Atletico Madrid behind. Thanks to Dzeko, the journey now continues in the quarter-finals.
The striker’s star scored his fourth goal of the season in the royal class and his first ever K. O. round of the Champions League. After the 1-0 win, Dzeko (63th/67th) had more chances, Schachtjor lacked the means to turn the match around as in the first leg. The Ukrainian champions missed their second move into the quarter-finals after 2011. At that time, Donetsk won the last 16 against Rome.
The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday (starting at 12 noon in the LIVETICKER) in Nyon.
