Wolff criticizes Formula 1 owner
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff has promised himself more from Liberty Media. Above all, he cannot understand the abolition of the Grid Girls.
Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff did not issue a good certificate to the new Formula 1 owner Liberty Media after his first year of service.
“Wolff said in an interview with the Stuttgarter Zeitung and the Stuttgarter Nachrichten (Thursday edition) that”the decisions made are not particularly relevant in themselves, but not only positive overall.
The Austrian considers the abolition of the Grid Girls to be superfluous,”You can discuss the pros and cons. In my eyes, their presence was not discriminatory, rather a sponsorship opportunity that has been sold,”said Wolff, adding:”I would have tried to integrate them more into the event and not just make them an object. I wouldn’t have abolished it completely. This is actionism and something that doesn’t really matter.”
Furthermore, the 46-year-old Viennese waits for a real coup from the new makers, who took control of the motorsport king class at the beginning of 2017.
“Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone was so brilliant in his best days because he was the only one who managed to land big deals. If Bernie went to a government and said that he was dreaming of a Grand Prix in Singapore, that’s what happened,”said Wolff. The current management must “show that it can do the trick”.
Liberty Media has announced the new season, scheduled for 25. In Melbourne, the Grid Girls will be replaced by children (Grid Kids). The start times have been postponed, with the new live streaming service F1 TV, the premier class will in future offer a separate alternative to the TV service.
An expansion of the racing calendar has been underway since the takeover. Recently, Vietnam’s capital Hanoi, the US metropolis Miami and the Argentinean capital Buenos Aires were traded as possible new locations for 2019.
