Ferrari reinforcement causes trouble
Ferrari brings a high-ranking FIA employee to the team. Laurent Mekies has insider knowledge of other teams. That’s why the move to Ferrari is explosive.
Spicy reinforcement for Ferrari and four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel: The Italian racing team has signed the Frenchman Laurent Mekies of the FIA.
The deputy Formula 1 race director will take up his duties at the Scuderia after a mandatory suspension of work on 20 March. September.
Ferrari did not comment on the exact function of Mekies, who had already worked with Vettel at Toro Rosso in 2007 and 2008. He is in charge of technical director Mattia Binotto, announced the Scuderia on Wednesday.
The personality is quite explosive, because Mekies has some insider knowledge about the cars of all teams. The FIA immediately released the 40-year-old, who was considered the designated successor of race director Charlie Whiting, from operational business.
McLaren Renndirekor Eric Bouillier has already criticised the Ferrari reinforcement:”We are very unhappy that the FIA is losing another key employee to a racing team. Ferrari has violated the Gentlemens’ Agreement,” he told motorsport.com.
Just last October, the FIA lost a high-ranking employee to Renault in Technical Director Marcin Budkowski. This had caused discontent among the competition. The Pole joins Emmericher Nico Hülkenberg’s team in April. The new season starts on 25. March in Melbourne.
