DTM instead of Formula E: Edoardo Mortara drives at the Lausitzring
Mercedes driver Edoardo Mortara will not participate in the Formula E race in Berlin and will instead drive in the DTM at the Lausitzring: “DTM has priority”.
DTM’s schedule conflicts with other racing series, such as the Formula E and Endurance World Championship (WEC), in which many of the current DTM drivers are active, are causing additional problems for manufacturers and drivers this season. BMW in particular is facing a major challenge: On the first weekend in May, the Munich team will compete at both the DTM season opener at Hockenheim (4th place) and the DTM season opener. till 6. May) as well as at the first race of the WEC in Spa-Francorchamps and have to decide which drivers to use in which series. Augusto Farfus, who is involved in both BMW programs, would prefer to commute between the race tracks by helicopter.
There are also scheduling conflicts between the DTM and the electric series: Parallel to the second DTM season event at the Lausitzring (18. till 20. May) is the only Formula E event in Germany. And also in July the race weekend in Zandvoort (13. till 15. July) with the electro finale in New York. Edoardo Mortara, who is active in both series, suffers more.
But at Mercedes the dice have already been cast – at least as far as the race at the Lausitzring is concerned:”Edo will definitely be sitting in the car at the Lausitzring,” says Mercedes DTM team boss Ulrich Fritz about’Motorsport-Total.com’. Since this is only the second DTM weekend of the season, it is still too early to decide a decision based on the overall status of the respective championship: “We signed Edo for the DTM two years ago. This is a priority,” he added.
DTM takes priority, but …
The fact that 2018 will be the last DTM season for the brand with the star makes no difference. After all, the Stuttgart team would like to say goodbye to the DTM stage with the best possible result – preferably with the championship title.
Mortara understands his employer’s decision:”I am a Mercedes driver and the DTM is my priority,” the star driver told Motorsport-Total.com. The man from Geneva sees a major problem in the collision with the Formula E race in New York. Because two races take place there on one weekend – a double chance for points.
Whether Mortara and his Formula E team Venturi will be used in America or on the Dutch North Sea coast has not yet been determined. If Venturi has the opportunity to get something, we’ll talk about it,” Fritz explains,”If Edo is in a promising position in the DTM in the championship, he won’t be driving in New York. That is clear, because the DTM has priority.”
The 31-year-old knows that his performance in the DTM will play a major role in whether he is allowed to contest the Formula E final or not. But the decision is up to Mercedes whether to participate in these races (Formula E in New York; Note. d. Red.) may or may not participate. It’s out of my hands,” he concludes.
