On the big stage of Indian Wells the Japanese Naomi Osaka celebrated her first triumph on the WTA tour.
In the duel between two tennis hopes, the 20-year-old won 6:3 and 6:2 against Daria Kassatkina of the same age.
For the defeated Russian, it was her third defeat in her fourth final, the only victory so far she had won in Charleston in 2017.
Osaka v. Kassatkina – that was the final duel between the two teenagers who had eliminated a lot of celebrities in the tournament in the Californian desert.
For example, world number one Simona Halep (Romania) failed Naomi Osaka in the semi-final just as the former Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova (Russia) failed.
Among others, Kassatkina swept the former number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel) off the field 6-0, 6-2 in the quarter-finals and then eliminated Venus Williams (USA).
Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) and US Open Champion Sloane Stephens (USA) also lost.
On Sunday in the Indian Wells final, however, Naomi Osaka put her stamp on the game.
Her opponent Kassatkina, who was almost always on the defensive, controlled her with powerful forehand blows.
After a good 40 minutes the Japanese player had the first set under control, after 1:10 hours she finally turned the first match point. The reward for their triumph was a cheque for the equivalent of just under 1.1 million euros.
