MotoGP opening win for Dovizioso
Andrea Dovizioso sets an exclamation mark in the opening race following last year’s narrowly missed MotoGP title. Johann Zarco misses a surprise victory.
Vice World Champion Andrea Dovizioso has set an exclamation mark after missing out on last year’s MotoGP title.
At the first round of the Motorcycle World Championship the Ducati driver celebrated victory in Qatar, defending champion Marc Marquez (Spain/Honda) had to admit a narrow defeat.
Italy’s superstar Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) came third.
Dovizioso had the chance to win the overall standings last year until the season finale in Valencia, but Marquez had to admit defeat. At the Losail International Circuit the duel in the top class continued directly.
Until the last racing quarter there was a surprise in the air. Frenchman Johann Zarco, Moto2 Champion of 2015 and 2016, dominated after his lap record in qualifying and fended off all attacks.
Five laps before the end the stars passed by, the 27-year-old from Yamaha customer team Tech3 finished eighth.
This year, for the first time since 2011, there is no German in MotoGP. Jonas Folger (Oberbergkirchen), last year Zarco’s team mate, relinquished his place due to an illness.
