Del Potro increases pressure on Zverev
Juan Martin del Potro climbs the world rankings by beating Roger Federer in Indian Wells. He’s breathing down the neck of Germany’s number one.
Roger Federer’s defeater Juan Martin del Potro has improved to sixth place in the world tennis rankings after his final triumph in Indian Wells against the record Swiss Grand Slam winner. The Olympic runner-up from Argentina thus made up two positions and is now breathing down the neck of Germany’s number one Alexander Zverev (Hamburg).
“Maestro” Federer leads the ranking despite his first defeat in the 18th century. His lead over his Spanish rivals Rafael Nadal, however, shrank from 600 to 290 points. Philipp Kohlschreiber from Augsburg climbed up six places. The man from Augsburg was only stopped in the quarter-finals of del Potro at the Masters in California and now ranks 31st. Space.
In the women’s competition both finalists made great strides forward. First-time winner Naomi Osaka from Japan improved from 44th to 22nd place, the defeated Russian Daria Kassatkina made up eight places and ranks eleventh right behind Angelique Kerber from Kiel in the top 10. Kassatkina had defeated Kerber in Indian Wells in the quarter-finals.
Another industry leader is Romanian Simona Halep, who lost to Osaka in the semi-finals. Second-best German behind Kerber is Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe), who is 13th. forfeited a place.
