Juncadella before DTM comeback: Don’t think about the future
Mercedes returnee Daniel Juncadella feels perfectly prepared for his DTM comeback in 2018: “Know the tyres, can quickly get used to cars”.
For the 2018 DTM season Mercedes is bringing back two drivers to the squad who had already turned their backs on the scene – for very different reasons. Ex-Champion Pascal Wehrlein celebrates a comeback in Formula 1 for lack of options. Daniel Juncadella will also take the place of Maro Engel, whose second career in the DTM brought a victory, but was nevertheless only short-lived.
Juncadella’s second attempt in the DTM will be limited in time. Mercedes is withdrawing from the scene at the end of the 2018 season. What will happen with the DTM afterwards is still unclear. New alternatives for the drivers are not yet in sight, because a third manufacturer next to BMW and Audi is missing: “Instead of thinking about the future, I would rather concentrate on the here and now,” says Juncadella before his comeback.
“It is a completely different approach compared to my other years in the DTM. On the other hand, I have learned a different approach myself anyway,” describes the Spaniard, who presents himself as grown up and mature:”I now enjoy racing more fundamentally – driving the car and competing against the best drivers in the world, that’s what it’s all about” Despite a gap in the DTM résumé, the 26-year-old wants to meet this challenge.
“Cars have changed once again and lost 30 percent of their downforce. I haven’t been able to drive it yet. But I know the tyres because I worked with Hankook in 2016 to develop them,” he says,”I think I can get used to the cars quickly, even though we don’t have much time to test them. I think it is one of my strengths to be able to adapt quickly to different vehicles. I’m not worried about that.”
