Eifel weather strikes again: Does VLN1 have to be cancelled?
The Westfalenfahrt is in the balance: It will not be decided until Thursday afternoon whether the first VLN run will take place – RCN test runs cancelled
Uncertainty at the Nürburgring: The season opener of the VLN Endurance Championship 2018 is in the balance. The onset of winter on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in the second half of March still continues, which is why it is not yet quite clear whether it will be possible to drive on Saturday at all. The test and set-up runs of the circuit Challenge Nürburgring (RCN) on Thursday have already been cancelled. On that day, the VLN will finally decide whether the season opener will take place.
“We would have to cancel the race today,” says Michael Bork, Head of Sport at VLN, “Not only possible snow on the track and in the run-off areas is causing us headaches, but above all the expected temperatures. If these are in the clear plus range, we can drive. If it appears that they are also around freezing during the day, a race makes little sense. The tires cannot then be brought up to temperature and thus do not develop their efficiency. Safety first. But the predictions promise rising temperatures and let us hope.”
Indeed, the weather services are predicting an end to the cold spell exactly for Saturday. However, the values will remain low in the single-digit range. The problem here is that any remaining snow could become a problem in the run-off zones. Snowfall is forecast for the night from Thursday to Friday. If this should remain until Saturday, it could become problematic. Melting water from the run-off zones would be a risk that would make running a race unacceptable from an insurance point of view.
The VLN works not only with weather services but also with the tyre manufacturers on the question of whether the race can take place. Temperatures that are too cold could also become a danger here. Due to negative straights, the test and adjustment drives had to be cancelled last Saturday.
The participants of the VLN are annoyed about the distribution of the race dates: “In summer we could drive without problems, but the owners of the Nürburgring prefer to keep these dates free for tourist trips”, complains a participant in an interview with’Motorsport-Total.com’. Since the VLN now consists of only nine races, a March race would no longer be necessary.
