Raiola scolds Buffon return
For Mino Raiola, the nomination of Gianluigi Buffon is the wrong way out of Italy’s crisis. His protégé Donnarumma must continue to wait for number one.
Star consultant Mino Raiola is worried about his protégé Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Four months after his resignation, Gianluigi Buffon will make a comeback to the Italian national team on Friday, when 40-year-old Luigi Di Biagio has been called up for the international matches on 23 February. March against Argentina (20.45 at LIVETICKER) and 27. March against England. Donnarumma, one of the world’s best youngsters, would once again only play second fiddle.
For Raiola, the Buffon nomination after the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia is the wrong way out of the crisis.
“I’m amazed at the choice of Buffon, whom I love, but that’s Italy,” he said in an interview with Radio 24: “I’ve been trying to change things for 10 or 15 years – without success.”
We give Giampiero Ventura and now Di Biagio – who has never achieved anything at a high level – the national team and then wait for good results,” said Raiola.
For him it is clear: “If we nominate Buffon now, we have to make the way to the European Championship 2020 with him” Donnarumma, who must continue to wait for his time as Italy’s number 1, would suffer more.
