Reminder of Mario: Andretti in Phoenix in retro design
Andretti Autosport remembers Mario Andretti’s last victory 25 years ago with a special car design
Nice treat for IndyCar fans: Marco Andretti will compete at the second round of the 2018 IndyCar season at the ISM Raceway in Phoenix with a retro design. He remembers the last victory of his grandfather Mario in 1993 in the same place. With the current sponsors, but with the classic colours of the Newman Haas team at the time, he will hunt for victory in Avondale.
“Our sponsor was ready to go back to the drawing board when we had the idea for the retro design,” says the 31-year-old, “The colours black, white and red remind us of many vehicles from my family and were a big part of my life when I grew up. “It’s really cool to put one of my cars on this pedigree.”
A possible good omen: Phoenix was also the second station on the calendar in early April 1993. For Newman/Haas, which is in no relation to the current Formula 1 and NASCAR teams of Gene Haas, the dream combination of Mario Andretti and Nigel Mansell drove that season. While Mario Andretti celebrated his last career victory in Phoenix, Mansell really got going and won the championship that year ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy. These successes marked the beginning of the CART boom in Europe in the 1990s.
The West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix will only be consumable for Europeans by staying up for a long time or getting up very early: The twilight race starts on the night of Saturday, the 7th of May. April, to Sunday, 8. April, at 3 o’clock CET.
