“Spiderman” is back: Castroneves enjoys IndyCar test
Helio Castroneves made a tremendous comeback test in Birmingham – The new aerokit causes hardly any problems for the Brazilian
Although team mate Josef Newgarden set the best time in the IndyCar test in Birmingham, Penske returnee Helio Castroneves stole his show at Barber Motorsports Park. The Brazilian, who was transferred from Penske into the sports car program and was on the road with the new IndyCar aerokit for the first time ever, drove the third fastest time behind Newgarden and Will Power – as if he had never forgotten it.
“My muscles just had to regain their old movements,” grins the always good-humoured three-time Indy 500 winner, who will contest the Indianapolis Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500-mile race for Penske, “Of course I’m now a sports car driver, but my roots can’t be denied so easily. I have an IndyCar mentality!”
Castroneves had to get to know the new Aerokit, “It’s really different and I’ve had a few hairy moments,” he admits, “I’ve had to change my driving style a little bit. Because the weight distribution has shifted to the front, it is easier to compensate for transverse uprights. But when turning into the curve the vehicle is very nervous. “We’ve made a few changes to the vote, things have been getting better.”
“I forgot what a big effect a small set-up change has on an IndyCar. That was far less clear in the sports car. And the sports car has traction control that we don’t have here, so we have to be more careful. There are still a few minor changes that I have to find out, but in the end it’s like riding a bike. The few laps in the rain were also fun. Chevrolet has made a few changes to the software, so the car is easy to drive. It’s too bad I didn’t have more time” The test had to be stopped early due to heavy rainfall.
After the weak start of the Penske team at St. I forgot how much fun we have when Helio is in the conference room,” says Will Power: “We have the same humour and always get together to cause a little trouble. Can’t wait for May.”
After the Barber test, Helio Castroneves will also be on the final winter test drives in Indianapolis on 27 May. March be there. There he will move to the 102. Indianapolis 500 before returning to the Acura ARX-05 in Long Beach as part of the IndyCar series. With this he co-determined the events at the IMSA classics in Daytona and Sebring, before teething troubles pulled the car out of the race in both cases.
