Federer loses against number 175 – and first place
Roger Federer loses in the 2. Round of the ATP tournament in Miami against Thanasi Kokkinakis. Beneficiary is Rafael Nadal, who replaces Federer as world number one.
Defending champion Roger Federer surprisingly lost his opening match at the ATP Masters in Miami.
The world number one from Switzerland lost to the 15 years younger Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (world ranking: 175), after 2:21 hours 6:3, 3:6, 6:7 (4:7) and won his second defeat in a row. This was last the case in November 2014, when Federer lost the ATP final in London and the first singles match in the Davis Cup final against France.
Last Sunday, Federer (36) had suffered his first defeat of the season in the Indian Wells final against Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina.
After the tournament in Miami, Federer will now be replaced by Rafael Nadal from Spain at the top of the ranking.
