Salah will Play!
What Manuel Neuer’s metatarsus is for Germany, Mohamed Salah’s shoulder for Egypt. The Liverpool superstar had injured his left joint in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, but since then he’s trembled up and down the Nile: Can Salah make it to Russia? On Monday national coach Hector Cuper gave the answer, the top scorer of the Premier League is in the final World Cup squad of the “Pharaohs”.
In the 26th minute of the Kiev Champions League final between Liverpool FC and Real Madrid (3-1), Salah fell on his left shoulder in a duel with Real captain Sergio Ramos and had to be replaced shortly afterwards. An exact diagnosis was not communicated, only that the tapes had been affected became known. The medical staff of the Egyptian national team stated the downtime as “three to four weeks”.
And despite his injury, Egypt’s hopes are high, as expected, in the final World Cup squad. Last week the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) had already indicated this decision, national coach Hector Cuper stuck to it and nominated the top scorer and best player of the past Premier League season into his final World Cup squad. However, the Argentinean will probably have to do without Salah for the time being. As the “Pharaohs” announced, Salah will not train with the team until 9 June, but will continue to be treated individually on his damaged joint.
Egypt’s opening Group A match against Uruguay on 15 June is likely to miss Salah. Whether the 25-year-old will be able to play hosts Russia (19 June) or Saudi Arabia on 25 June remains to be seen.
