Sanchez will stay in Munich
Before sports director Hasan Salihamidzic also said goodbye on holiday, FC Bayern Munich had made some decisions. One of them concerns Renato Sanches: After a lost year as a loaner at Swansea, Bavaria wants to give the Portuguese another chance.
At his rental year in Swansea everything went wrong for Sanches from front to back. The midfielder, who had been named the tournament’s best junior player at EURO 2016, became a hit during this period only because he played a short pass into the side out against an ad gang without any pressure. The result of a messed up season for the 20-year-old: Twelve appearances in the Premier League (nine from the start, 700 minutes), two in the League Cup, one in the FA Cup. Sanches couldn’t score a goal.
Sanches’ star also sank in the national team as quickly as he had risen again: for the last time in March 2017 he was allowed to compete, he is not a member of the World Championship squad of the European Champion.
Ex-club Benfica Lisbon, from whom Bayern Sanches had bought Sanches in the summer of 2016 for 35 million euros (plus any bonuses), already asked in Munich if they would like to borrow the midfielder (free of charge). But the FCB refused, they want to try again with Sanches at Säbener Straße. At least for the first half of next season, the Portuguese will play for Bavaria – and at best return to his former strength under new coach Niko Kovac.
