Mavs-Coup with Doncic – Wagner and Bonga to the Lakers!
A historic draft day: For the first time in 33 years, two German talents were selected – and both are drawn to California! Dirk Nowitzki can also look forward to Europe’s greatest talent.
After the draft lottery on 15 May, it was clear that the Suns – last season’s worst team – could vote first, ahead of the Sacramento Kings and Dennis Schröders Atlanta Hawks. And as expected, Phoenix chose Arizona Center DeAndre Ayton for the No.1 overall pick.
Afterwards the Kings Duke-Forward elected Marvin Bagley III, before the race started. The Hawks, who are still speculating about Schröder’s departure, struck Luka Doncic. The 19-year-old Slovenian is the greatest European talent in years and has just taken Real Madrid to the championship.
“Welcome my man”: Nowitzki is looking forward to Doncic
But that’s not all, because: After Memphis Jaren Jackson Jr. (F; Michigan State) pecked in fourth place, the Mavericks Point Guard brought Trae Young (Oklahoma) to the Hawks, but together with a future first round pick, they tradted him to Dallas. “Welcome my man”, Dirk Nowitzki, who is entering his 21st season, immediately welcomed his new team mate.
It became exciting from a German point of view late in round one: Moritz Wagner, the Michigan Wolverines’ great German talent, finished 25th in the Los Angeles Lakers. The 21-year-old joins the world’s best-known basketball franchise and meets a talented team alongside Lonzo Ball, which is still hoping for the free agents LeBron James and Paul George.
Wagner is speechless – Bonga also a Laker
Because Wagner was also penalised in the first round, the 2.11-metre Power Forward receives a guaranteed contract. “I will do my best,” Wagner promised at the ESPN microphone, “100 percent every day. I’m speechless, really speechless.”
