South Korea’s team thrown eggs at on return
On their return home, the South Korean national team received a predominantly positive reception on Friday. The victory against Germany had caused great cheering, even if the team failed to make the targeted entry into the round of 16. Some fans were so disappointed that they threw eggs at the team.Around 300 fans and journalists came to Incheon Airport to meet the team of national coach Tae-Yong Shin. The team posed on a photo podium shortly after landing and the incident occurred: several eggs were thrown out of the crowd of waiting and mostly positive fans towards the team. Players were not hit, but while security guards were in a hurry to remove the eggshells from the rolled red carpet, some of the players were visibly shocked.
Actually, the victory against Germany had caused great cheering in South Korea. The national team was delighted with the unexpected 2-0 win in the final group match, which sealed the World Champion’s defeat in the preliminary round, but suddenly turned to grief as the result of the parallel match between Mexico and Sweden became known. South Korea international had been counting on reaching the round of 16, but then learned that Mexico, who had won twice before, had lost 3-0 to Sweden. So South Korea had to travel home after the preliminary round, just like four years earlier in Brazil.
Son and Shin thank the fans
Heung-Min Son thanked me for the reception despite the egg litters. “We’re sorry for our fans for not keeping our promise to make it to the knockout stages,” said the Tottenham Hotspur striker. The team will continue to work hard in the coming months.
Coach Shin also expressed his thanks for the support up to the last group match, referring to his statement that South Korea only had a 1% chance of winning against Germany: “Without the fans we would not have achieved the one-percent miracle. He and his team would not have liked to return until July. Now, however, there is enough time to prepare for the next attack on the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
