Martial counters Mourinho
Anthony Martial only wanted to be present at the birth of his son. But this has now developed into an unworthy confrontation with José Mourinho, which could speed up Martial’s departure from Manchester United.
It could have been a perfectly normal process, as it always happens in the football business: Before Manchester United’s test match against AC Milan last Thursday (CEST, 9:8 in the final) Anthony Martial had left the USA to attend the birth of his first child in Paris. But that was not the end of the story.
Coach José Mourinho found four days later that Martial “should be back now that the baby is here, but he isn’t”. A public rebuke with consequences: As soon as Mourinho announced after his 2-1 draw with Real Madrid on Wednesday (CEST) that he had “no idea” when Martial would return to practice, the 22-year-old Frenchman announced via Instagram that he would return to Manchester on Thursday. “Sorry, but my family will always come first.”
At the same time, Martial hinted that the birth of his wife had worsened, but that she was now “thank God she is better again”. Nevertheless, according to English media reports, he is now facing a fine of two weeks’ wages, which corresponds to a good 200,000 euros, for absenteeism for eight days in total.
Martial is moving away – there should not be a shortage of interested people
An uncaring act? Or maybe Martial wanted to make a little statement? He finally leaves Manchester one year before the end of the contract, his working hours under Mourinho have decreased significantly. United would probably let him go abroad if the replacement was right; there should be no shortage of potential buyers. After the unworthy “baby fight”, a farewell after three years has at least not become any less probable.
