Rebic stays with Eintracht Frankfurt – and extends his contract
“Ante is certainly one of the most positive phenomena of the World Cup, and we must make no secret of the fact that it arouses desires,” said Fredi Bobic, Member of the Board of Directors for Sport, on Friday. “It speaks for Eintracht Frankfurt that we have succeeded in retaining such a strong player, who can certainly be described as a whiz kid.”
“Some top clubs” had wooed Rebic and presented him with “one or the other economically better offer,” says Bobic, who spoke of a “milestone. “That he stays with us shows that he carries the eagle in his heart and that we are on the right path with our planning. And it also shows that we have taken another step forward in terms of cost-effectiveness and can keep up with top players.”
“We could have easily raised a record amount”
The extension of the contract should be associated with a corresponding increase in salary. Whether the new contract contains an exit clause was not announced by Eintracht. “We fooled everything we could,” Bobic explained. “We could easily have saved a record amount.” However, in the case of a sale, 50 percent of the redemption fee goes to former club AC Florence.
Bobic is fully committed to the attacker and 22-time Croatian international before the new season, who moved from Florence to Frankfurt two years ago on a loan basis and was signed for only around two million euros last winter. But not only in the DFB Cup final against FC Bayern (3:1) he showed with two goals (kicker mark 1) that he is now worth many times over. So far he has scored 49 Bundesliga matches, eight goals and six assists for Eintracht.
“It was important to us that we keep his qualities in our ranks.”
Even after the change of coach, he will remain a fixture on the Frankfurt offensive. “With his dynamism and speed, he fits perfectly into the system of our trainer Adi Hütter,” says Bobic, “It was important to us that we continue to have his qualities in our ranks. For many Eintracht fans, Ante is an identification figure – not least because of his two beautiful goals in the cup final.”
