Mourinho defends himself
The new Premier League season is three games old, and Manchester United are already in crisis. Red Devils Tottenham Hotspur lost 3-0 in their own stadium on Monday evening and after their second consecutive defeat, José Mourinho praised the fans and defended himself against his critics in a typical manner.
When Tottenham scored 3-0 in the person of Lucas Moura a few minutes before the end, the glorious Old Trafford emptied in no time at all. Those who remained stared silently at the lawn, where the hosts made their last desperate attempts to make the result at least not look so desolate. And José Mourinho was also speechless. The Portuguese, who had previously been an active coach and cheered on by his team, stood by the side with an empty view. The three goals scored did not miss their mark – Manchester United were in shock. “We worked very well during the week. We have prepared very well. We played very well in practice. The players had a fantastic attitude,” said the 55-year-old after the final whistle at “Sky”.
The compensation for a bitter 3-2 defeat in Brighton, the deliberate distraction from numerous sides of the war and last but not least the right response to burgeoning criticism of playing style and coaching – the effort was not to be denied by ManUnited on Monday evening. The hosts had won numerous chances in the first round, only Romelu Lukaku missed out on the best opportunities. Mourinho’s commitment in the first half led him to make a special observation: “We haven’t lost in terms of tactics. But we lost the game.”
However, the criticism of the controversial coach should not be torn down and so he fought back against his critics at the press conference as a precaution. “How was the result today,” he asked and raised three fingers in the air to answer. “But what does that mean? Three championship titles I won. I’ve won more championship titles than all 19 coaches put together. I three, the two.” Mourinho left the press room with wild gestures and rage – “a little more respect,” he shouted at the journalists.
