Ferryman still missing – Nübel celebrates premiere
FC Schalke 04 will have to give up goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann for the time being. In Istanbul, Alexander Nübel will once again be in goal – but there will be a change on the Schalker bench.
It has been official since Monday lunchtime: FC Schalke 04 will travel to Istanbul on Tuesday without Ralf Fährmann as their regular keeper. The muscle injury in the adductor area, which the 30-year-old suffered on Saturday while warming up before the Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen (0:2), is so serious that he cannot stand in the goal of the Schalkers at the Champions League match against Galatasaray on Wednesday (9 p.m., LIVE! in the stream at DAZN). This was the result of an MRT examination.
As already against Bremen, substitutekeeper Alexander Nübel will therefore again move into the starting eleven in Istanbul. Germany’s eleven-time U-21 national goalkeeper will thus celebrate his premiere in the premier league. In the Bundesliga, the 22-year-old has so far scored three goals for Schalke. However, unlike on Saturday, the substitutes will not be routine Michael Langer, but Yannic Lenze or Erdem Canpolat, both playing in Schalke’s U 19. The 17-year-olds were appointed to the official Champions League squad by the Royal Blue before the season, Langer not. Because of their team’s Youth League game in Istanbul, the duo are already part of the Schalker Reisetross.
“No one has any doubts when he’s in goal.”
Nübel’s appearance at the Istanbul witch’s cauldron does not give the Schalkern any cause for concern. “There’s nothing to worry about when he’s in goal,” said coach Domenico Tedesco after his appearance against Bremen, where he was innocent of both goals. Nübel convinces with a “good room layout” and his presence at free kicks and corner kicks.
