Simeone praises tactician Favre: “He convinced the boys”
Atletico Madrid remain the chasing force in Group A of the Champions League. Coach Diego Simeone is still under the impression of the disappointing 4-0 draw in Dortmund. There was praise especially for BVB coach Lucien Favre.
It was only two weeks ago that a detached Dortmund team deciphered Atleticos’ code, which was otherwise so difficult to crack in Europe. The 0:4 in Westphalia has left traces. The latest 1:1 CD Leganes also raised questions once again. Simeone had to face them on Monday evening at the regular press conference in front of the Champions League hit. “The team is in a good mood,” the Argentinian replied to the journalists’ quiet criticism of offensive and defensive behaviour.
Simeone doesn’t have time to look over his shoulder anyway. “We’re concentrating on the game against an opponent who is in fantastic form and still unbeaten in the league and Champions League. They are also four points ahead of the Bavarians,” the 48-year-old is in the picture: “They are currently among the best teams in Europe. Especially the “perfect counter play” of the BVB impresses the Argentinian.
The successful Dortmund mix
Favre, with whom Simeone had clashed on the sidelines several times in the first leg, plays a major role: “He’s doing a fantastic job. He has convinced the young players that they are playing in a way that helps the team above all. The mix of defensive stability, the strong midfielders and the high pace on the sidelines makes the Bundesliga leaders so strong.
In these seven years, we haven’t been wrong too often either.
Diego Simeone on Atleticos playing style
Your own playing style, successful for years, but often rather unattractive, is outdated, isn’t it? Simeone also had an answer for that: “You have to choose one and we have the one that best fits our player profile. In those seven years, we haven’t been wrong too often either.”
