Akram Afif makes it possible: Qatar defeats Switzerland
The Swiss national team surprisingly lost their test match against Qatar 0:1 (0:0) in Lugano on Wednesday evening. Akram Hassan Afif took the lead in the 96th rankings four minutes before the end. The team around Granit Xhaka showed a mostly uninspired performance over 90 minutes and left the few chances to take the lead behind.
Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s team had a hard time getting into the game and for a long time showed no ideas. The host of the 2022 World Cup, on the other hand, stood defensively well and repeatedly put dangerous pinpricks to the front.
The Swiss line-up included Leipzig’s Mvogo, Hamburg’s Lacroix, Gladbach’s Zakaria and two former Bundesliga pros Xhaka (FC Arsenal) and Shaqiri (Liverpool). However, no one in the Swiss team was really in danger. Another Gladbach player had the biggest chance in the first half: Lang failed at the post.
In the second run the hosts did more for the game, debutant Fassnacht hit the crossbar. Four minutes before the end, the Qatari countered with an exemplary performance: Afif had plenty of room on the left, danced out the rushing Mvogo and then pushed into the empty goal without a problem. The visitors were able to take the cheered lead over time, and the Emirate were able to make a surprising success of the match. For the Swiss, the Nations League match against Belgium will continue on Sunday (20:45).
