Clasico alert! Barça vs. Real in the cup
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will meet directly in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. This was the result of the draw on Friday afternoon, which also brought Real Betis and FC Valencia together.
So there will be two more editions of the Clasico this season. Barça against Real for final ticket in the Spanish King’s Cup. The two arch rivals will meet on 6 and 27 February, first at Camp Nou and three weeks later at Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. “This is one of the best games you can see in the world these days. It will be a great fight,” Reals club director Emiliano Butragueño announced afterwards. Barcelona are record winners in Spain with 30 wins and defending champions; Real have won the trophy 19 times.
The result of the draw also means that three days after the semi-final return leg, the Catalans, who currently lead the league in La Liga, will have to play again in Madrid, then for league points (2 March).
On paper, Real Betis’ chances of qualifying for the final at their own stadium on 25 May increased. The club from Seville, who have won the Cup in their history in 1977 and 2005, have avoided the two major leagues and will face FC Valencia (seven Copa del Rey titles, most recently in 2008). This is where the current league eighth will meet the league seventh.
