Bayer remains goalless – Baryssau surprises Arsenal
Bayer Leverkusen started the intermediate round of the Europa League on Thursday evening with a zero number at the Black Sea at the Russian representative FK Krasnodar. There was a surprise in Belarus: BATE Baryssau beat FC Arsenal! Inter Milan lived up to their role as favourites at Rapid Vienna. FC Sevilla (title holders 2014, 2015 and 2016) won in Rome at Lazio. Galatasaray Istanbul had to bow to Benfica Lisbon.
Krasnodar had their first compulsory match against Leverkusen since 13 December, because the Russian league will not start again until the weekend after next. “We have to make sure that it will be an advantage for us,” goalkeeper Hradecky had demanded before the game – in the end it was 0:0. Bayer worked out optical advantages, had significantly more ball possession than the Russians, but initially missed the move to the goal. And the Werkself had to watch out, because Krasnodar approached dangerously through Ignatyev (24th) and Olsson (39th). In the second run the Bundesliga team increased the number of strokes, but shots from Bailey and Brandt did not lead to success. After Krasnodar had missed a double chance (69th), the ball floundered in the 88th minute in the net, but the goal of Leverkusen’s Joker Alario was not given – handball.
Even without Icardi: Inter wins at Rapid
In Vienna, Inter Milan handed in its business card to Rapid. The “clear outsiders” were Rapid coach Dietmar “Didi” Kühbauer, who explained before the match that his team had sold out to the Lombards, who were playing without captain striker Icardi. The Austrian Bundesliga’s eighth-figure was solidly defended, but the Italians took the lead before the break with a penalty kick from Martinez (39th). Vecino (60th) scored just above the crossbar for the third in Serie A, who switched to administration mode. Vienna was too harmless in the attack.
Arsenal loses the game and Lacazette
There was a surprise in Belarus. Arsenal lost 0:1 at BATE Baryssau. The Gunners, once again without Özil, had the Belarusian serial champion under control, but left some chances and had to accept after a free-kick flank almost with the break whistle the 0:1 by Dragon. Coach Unai Emery’s team ran behind in vain, and Aubameyang, a former Joker from Dortmund, could not change that. The more so as the Premier League club had to play outnumbered in the end because Lacazette had extended his elbow.
Ben Yedder gives Lazio a tricky task
FC Sevilla won the Stadio Olimpico 1:0, making Lazio Rome a delicate task for the return leg. Lazio, who had to manage without top striker Immobile and midfield star Milinkovic-Savic (both stricken), conceded the goal of the day in the 22nd minute by Ben Yedder. He scored for the fifth time in his fifth EL game. Marusic missed the equaliser a little later, but the Biancocelesti were far too few in the offensive.
Seferovic puts Galatasaray under pressure
Galatasaray Istanbul lost against Benfica Lisbon 1:2, a great starting position for the Portuguese. The Turks had returned with their well-deserved equaliser after Salvio’s (27th) penalty kick through Luyindama’s header (54th), but the ex-Frankfurter Seferovic (64th) scored for Lisbon.
