Eintracht turbulent – Salzburg cracked for the first time
Eintracht Frankfurt may hope for the European League round of the last sixteen – in a wild first leg with Donezk there was even more than the 2:2. RB Salzburg conceded the first defeat of the season in Bruges despite Junuzovic’s brilliant piece, Chelsea and Naples won away.
Eintracht Frankfurt did not win the seventh Europa League match of the season for the first time, but after a 2-2 draw against Schachtar Donezk in the cold Kharkiv, they still had every chance of reaching the round of sixteen. After a wild start on Valentine’s Day there seemed to be even more to it: Leading goal Hinteregger after goalkeeper error (7.), equalizer Marlos by penalty (10.), yellow-red Stepanenko after two fouls (11.)! Eintracht, without Bankdrücker Haller, was patient with the unexpected majority in front of almost 3000 fans and finally took the lead again after a strong Jovic flank by Kostic (50th). But despite a long winter break Donezk was not beaten yet: Trapp had to show everything first (62.) and was then powerless at Taison (67.) – 2:2. Hinteregger (78.) and da Costa (89.) missed the last chances of victory of the guests.
Chelsea cracks Malmö-Hexenkessel without Hazard & Co. – Salzburg series tears up
Chelsea FC are keeping a close eye on the round of sixteen: Although Maurizio Sarri, the pressurised coach of the Premier League Sixth, also placed Hazard, Higuain and Rüdiger on the bench alongside Hudson-Odoi, Uwe Rösler’s Malmö FF scored their first away goals in 2019 – and their first away win: Barkley (30th) and Giroud (58th) scored in a hot atmosphere, Christiansen (80th) shortened the time. Malmö, who started preparing for the new season only four weeks ago, still needs a magical night at Stamford Bridge.
RB Salzburg, on the other hand, did not really live up to their secret, if not co-favourite role for the title in the first leg of the intermediate round: Last year’s semi-finalist conceded his first defeat at Champions League relegators Bruges in the 32nd compulsory match of the season! The ex-Bremer Junuzovic had already lost in the 17th minute from over 20 meters goalkeeper Horvath, who had lost hold and orientation while running out. But Denswil (64th) and Wesley (81st) turned the game around for Belgians who had been holding back for a long time.
Naples don’t mind cheeky penalty – Celtic reaches its limits
Carlo Ancelotti’s SSC Naples had been thrown out of the Champions League with a full nine points, but she quickly acclimatised to the new competition: Insigne (11th, after a bitter goalkeeper stick mistake) and Callejon (21st) pulled Ludovic Magnins FC Zurich out early, Zielinski raised the plug (77th). But the cheekiest goal was the 1-3 final: Kololli lifted a penalty under the crossbar (83.).
Celtic, however, had started the calendar year with seven wins from seven games, but had painful limits against Valencia: Sobrino on Cheryshev (42.), Cheryshev on Sobrino (49.) – the visitors cooled Celtic Park with 2-0.
