Haller paves the way for Frankfurt – Arsenal corrects the embarrassment
After a turbulent first leg, Frankfurt went into the second leg of the Europa League intermediate round against Schachtar Donezk with a 2:2 score and, thanks to Haller, solved the ticket against the Ukrainians with a 4:1 score. Arsenal had lost surprisingly at BATE Baryssau, but corrected this disgrace. Salzburg, too, was under pressure against Bruges, but continued to make good progress.
Eintracht Frankfurt is still a power in the Europa League and did not lose at the eighth appearance in the current competition. After the turbulent 2:2 in the first leg in Kharkiv, the Hessians played a 3:1 match against Schachtar Donetsk in the second leg in Frankfurt and thus entered the round of sixteen. After it came in the run-up to the game to a police mission and the planned Choreo of the fans was canceled, Frankfurt found with a little delay in the game. But then Jovic (23.) scored first, only a short time later Haller raised his point after a handball by Matviienko (27.). Adi Hütter’s team then had everything under control before Junior Moraes (63rd) made the game exciting again out of nothing. Eintracht was lucky twice before Haller (80th) and Rebic (88th) stopped the trembling.
Thanks to Daka: Salzburg corrects the first leg
In the first leg in Bruges, RB Salzburg had to admit defeat for the first time this season after 32 compulsory games without defeat, but in the second leg the Austrians corrected the result against the Belgians. Already in the first round Salzburg laid the cornerstone with Schlager (17th) and two Daka (29th, 43rd) after Dabbur had missed a penalty in the 11th minute. But Dabbur set the 4:0 final point in injury time.
Arsenal: One more round with Özil
It was the surprise last Thursday, when Arsenal lost 0:1 at BATE Baryssau. But the Gunners lived up to their status as favourites against the Belarusians in the return leg – 3-0. Without Lacazette (red ban) but again with Özil, who had not been considered in the first leg, the Emery eleven started early: Volkov pushed an Aubameyang flank into his own net (4th). Mustafi raised his head after one corner (39th) and ex-Dortmund Sokratis was also on the spot after one corner (60th).
Verdi removes the last doubts in Naples
SSC Naples, coached by Carlo Ancelottis and unluckily retiring from the Champions League with nine points, left Zurich no chance in either match. In the first leg, the Italians had already won 3-1 away, but in the second leg, Verdi eliminated the last doubts shortly before the break. Ounas set a score of 2:0 in the 75th minute.
Valencia puts Celtic in its place – Toljan flies
Celtic, who had won eight games without a goal at national level this calendar year, had to bow internationally to FC Valencia. The Spaniards had already set the course in Glasgow with a 2-0 lead and let nothing come up in the second leg – 1-0. Toljan, lent by Dortmund, saw yellow-red (37th), Gameiro made everything clear in the majority (70th).
Azmoun throws out Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce Istanbul had travelled to St Petersburg with a 1-0 goal behind them, but the Turks were quickly forced to make the move: Ozdoev (4) and Azmoun (37) scored 2-0, but Mehmet Topal scored 2-0 before the break, which was not enough for Fenerbahce as Azmoun was there again (76).
Villarreal: Outnumbering the necessary draw
FC Villarreal deservedly reached the round of the last 16 against Sporting Lisbon. After the 1:0 in the first leg, the Spaniards had to tremble despite field superiority after the 0:1 by Bruno Fernandes. But first Jefferson saw yellow-red, then Fornals redeemed the “yellow submarine” in majority (80.).
Dinamo Zagreb was against Viktoria Pilsen after the 1:2 in the first leg by Orsic’s lead goal after beautiful hack template from Petkovic early on the eighth-final course (15th). Dilaver provided for the superior Croats for the 2-0 break (33.). The Czechs seldom radiated danger, a missed pass in the opposing half made a counterattack possible and the decision by Petkovic (73.).
